Perform some simple tests to see if you can increase your speed

In order to offer a competitively priced service, it is industry practice that broadband users share their connection.  This is known as the contention ratio and it may affect the speed of your connection depending on the volume of traffic on the network, especially during peak periods.  This sharing is done on a ratio basis and the table below shows all the contention ratios.

JT Home Broadband JT Fibre Broadband
Speed up to 20Mb 100Mb 1Gb
Contention ratio 50:1 40:1 40:1
JT Professional Broadband JT Fibre for Business
Speed up to 20Mb 100Mb 1Gb
Contention ratio 20:1 10:1 10:1

Do a speedtest
To check the speed of your connection, you can carry out a speedtest.
For the best results, please ensure that you are using the JT hosted server to run the test as this will give the most accurate results.

Secure your router
If you are using a wireless router, ensure it is secure. It is possible in built up areas, if your router is not secure, your connection could be being used by another user.

How many people are using your connection?
If your connection feels slow and is secure how many people are using the connection?  Bandwidth may be reduced due to the amount of devices accessing the router.  For example games consoles, such as PlayStations, could be using a large amount of bandwidth if someone is gaming online.

Other applications running?
Are there other applications running in the background which may affect performance.

Anti-virus up to date?
Are anti-virus and firewall applications up to date? Some viruses are bandwidth hungry and may be utilising a high percentage of bandwidth if they are running in the background.
