Optimise your home Wi-Fi - Jersey

From video conferencing, to virtual school lessons and using Netflix or online gaming to stay entertained, everyone’s connectivity needs for work and leisure are different. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you optimise your broadband experience at home.

  1. Performance is always better when your devices are wired directly into your router, using standard ethernet cables. There are 4 LAN (Local Area Network) ports on your JT Hub Tilgin router and wherever possible you should hardwire some of your most bandwidth hungry devices, such as SMART TVs, Sky boxes, computers and gaming devices directly to your router, to get the best broadband speeds. Make sure the Ethernet cables you use are CAT.5e or 6 as the older CAT.5 cables will only give you speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
  2. It’s not always possible to connect all your devices directly to the router, so if you need a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection, you should ensure your JT Hub Tilgin router is ideally placed somewhere in the centre of your home on a table or shelf, rather than on the floor. The majority of JT Hub Tilgin routers offer two wireless bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. 5GHz gives performance benefits by providing faster data rates, however it is not as effective over longer distances.
  • The 2.4GHz is an all-purpose spectrum and provides better coverage around your home, however provides slower speeds. Your handheld devices such as your mobile phones, tablets and laptops should connect to the 2.4GHz frequency so if you are moving around your home you’ll maintain a good signal.
  • If you want to benefit from high speed wireless via the 5GHz band, you need to be in closer proximity to the router. Ideally and if you can, all streaming devices, such as your SMART TV, Amazon and Apple streaming devices should connect to 5GHz if in range and the devices are compatible, although connecting these devices to 2.4GHz still works just fine.
  • Spreading out your devices across the two wireless bands will maximise your home network performance. On either frequency, the best Wi-Fi performance will occur when your devices are closer to your JT Hub Tilgin router and when interfering objects, such as thick walls, cordless telephones, baby monitors, microwaves and even fish tanks are kept to a minimum.
    1. With an average of 20 devices per household connected to the internet, the quality of your connection may be affected as each one uses your Wi-Fi bandwidth. We recommend turning devices like tablets and smartphones off when you’re not using them as they often work in the background.
    2. Whilst our JT Hub Tilgin router provides a powerful and extensive Wi-Fi signal which is sufficient for the majority of homes, various factors such as the construction and size of your home could cause some rooms to have a weaker signal than others. If this is the case in your home, there are many wireless solutions that JT offers to help boost your Wi-Fi performance. 3. To reduce your network usage, you can choose to download or stream videos and TV shows in standard rather than high definition format. If you need to download large files such as movies in Ultra-HD or large updates for online games, it’s preferable for this to be done in off-peak hours (between midnight – 8am) when less people are using the network.
