What is the 3G switch-off?

What is the 3G switch-off?

Everything you need to know

The technology that provided the third generation (3G) of mobile network services is slowly being switched off across the UK and the rest of the world. At JT we intend to begin the switch off of our 3G mobile network across the Channel Islands from January 2025.

If you’re still using an old legacy 3G device, we wanted to give you as much notice as possible, so you are prepared for when the time comes. If you don’t have a compatible device, now’s the perfect time to consider changing it. You’ll need one that’s capable of 4G data and you may even want to consider buying a 5G enabled device.

We’re here to support you and help you pick the right device for you.

Getting you ready for the 3G switch off

For most of our customers who already have access to our 4G service, you won’t need to take any action. For the small number of customers who don’t have a 4G or 5G-ready phone, you’ll still be able to make calls and texts over our 2G network, but you may want to consider updating your device for better quality calls, and enhanced data services.

To help with that, we’ve pulled together some frequently asked questions to provide clarity and address any concerns you may have.

Our customer experience team are also ready to help you make the transition to 4G, we’ll be with you every step of the way.

FAQ's

Why is 3G being switched off?

Every UK mobile network has now announced their plans to switch off their 3G networks. This allows us to repurpose the technology used for 3G to help more customers get faster, more efficient 4G and in future 5G services. Our 2G network remains in place for calls and texts.

Will 2G be switched off too?

We have no immediate plans to switch off our 2G network, so you can keep using it for calls and texts.

What will happen if I don’t upgrade to a 4G or 5G phone?

If you have a 3G phone when 3G is switched off, you’ll only be able to use our 2G network. You’ll still be able to send texts and make calls, but you’ll get a better connection by switching to a phone that is 4G enabled.

I need to upgrade my device but don’t want an expensive handset. What can I do?

If you want to keep things simple, we have a great range of 4G phones, including refurbished ones. Click here to view our current range or visit us in store.

How do I check if my current device is 4G-enabled?

We recommend verifying your phone’s 4G compatibility by searching online for its make and model to review its specifications.

Android phones

  • Go to settings
  • Mobile Networks
  • Network Mode
  • Here you will see if your phone has the option of selecting a 4G/LTE mode. If the mode is listed, your phone is 4G enabled.

iPhone

  • Go to settings
  • General
  • Cellular
  • If you see Enable 4G LTE option, your phone is 4G compatible. You can select this option to enable 4G.

When will I be affected?

Our full 3G switch off won’t start until 2025 so nothing will change for you right now,  we will publish more information closer to the time.
