JT begins island-wide 5G rollout in Guernsey with first sites now live

JT has today announced the launch of its island-wide 5G rollout in Guernsey, with the first two sites now live in and around St Peter Port.

Marking a major milestone for the island, JT is the first telecommunications provider to publicly announce that the first sites are live and 5G can be seen on compatible devices in the area.

The rollout forms part of JT’s significant investment in next-generation mobile infrastructure across the Channel Islands and signals the beginning of a phased deployment programme that will see coverage extend across The Bailiwick of Guernsey over the next four months.

Built in partnership with Ericsson, the network is being deployed as a fully end-to-end combo 4G, 5G Non-Standalone (5G NSA) and 5G Standalone (5G SA) network — the most advanced form of 5G available. This dedicated architecture enables faster speeds, ultra-low latency and greater network reliability, while creating a platform capable of supporting future innovation, new digital services and emerging technologies across the island.

As part of this enhanced network capability, JT customers in Guernsey will also benefit from Voice over Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi Calling) at no additional cost, helping to improve call quality and connectivity in indoor or low-signal areas.

Initial performance and testing indicate that the new network will deliver a significant step-change in connectivity, with improved speeds, stronger signal strength, enhanced capacity and lower latency for islanders. As seen in Jersey, the introduction of 5G marks the beginning of a new era of digital capability, enabling innovation across multiple sectors and supporting long-term economic growth.

Alessandro Bovone, Chief Technology Officer of JT Group, said: “Today marks an exciting moment as we begin bringing 5G to Guernsey. This is a significant step forward to enhance the island’s digital infrastructure and one that will unlock new opportunities for both consumers and businesses.

“While the process has taken longer than anticipated due to regulatory approvals, we are pleased to now be moving at pace and to be the first operator to deliver 5G services in Guernsey. As with our rollout in Jersey, this is about investing in the future – building a network that will support the growing demands of island life, drive innovation, and enable new technologies for years to come.”

“By deploying a full 5G Standalone network, we are not just enhancing today’s mobile experience but creating a powerful platform for the digital services and opportunities of tomorrow.”

The rollout will continue on a phased basis, with additional sites coming online over the coming months as JT works towards full island coverage. The new 5G network is designed to provide world-class connectivity that is more reliable, secure and capable of supporting increasing data demands and emerging technologies.

JT Group Announces Leadership Transition

JT today announced that Chief Executive Officer Daragh McDermott has resigned after 26 years with the business, and now in his fifth year as CEO.

Having led JT through a significant period of transformation, including the successful acquisition of Manx Telecom Group, he believes now is the right time to step aside and allow the business to enter its next phase from a position of strength.

Daragh will remain with JT throughout his notice period to support a smooth transition and work closely with the Board to ensure an orderly handover.

JT Non-Executive Director Brian Fitzpatrick will assume the role of Interim CEO with immediate effect to ensure continuity while the Board undertakes the process of appointing a permanent successor.

Andy Green, Chair of JT, said: “Daragh has made an exceptional contribution to JT for almost three decades, changing the structure and strength of the industry and helping shape JT into the strong, forward-looking organisation it is today. The recent acquisition of Manx Telecom Group represents a significant milestone, and the foundations now in place position JT strongly for future growth.

As to the appointment of Brian as Interim CEO, Andy added, “Brian’s extensive leadership experience and deep sector knowledge make him ideally placed to lead the business on an interim basis.”

Daragh McDermott said: “After 26 years with JT, and now in my fifth year as CEO, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step down.

“It has been a privilege to lead JT and to work alongside such talented and committed colleagues. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, particularly the transformation of the business and the successful acquisition of Manx Telecom Group.

“JT has a strong future ahead and I leave with enormous confidence in the business, its people and its leadership team. I look forward to supporting Brian and the Board over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.”

JT further strengthens its circular economy

JT has today announced a series of new initiatives to further strengthen its commitment to building a circular economy – making it easier for customers to recycle devices and access more sustainable technology options.

This builds on JT’s partnership announced in October with We Buy Any Phone, which saw the launch of an online recycling platform offering customers a simple way to trade in old devices in exchange for cashback. The platform has already helped drive increased device reuse across the Islands.

As part of its next phase, JT has now introduced secure in-store recycling through a new partnership with IT Hardware Services CI (ITHSCI), enabling customers to safely and conveniently drop off old or unused devices at dedicated recycling boxes in JT’s shops. The initiative is designed to ensure devices are either refurbished, reused, or responsibly recycled, preventing unnecessary waste.

Alongside this, JT has also advanced their supply of high-quality, A-grade refurbished iPhones and pre-loved iPads. Available both online and in-store, the range offers customers greater choice at a more accessible price point – while supporting a more sustainable approach to technology consumption.

Helene Narcy, Chief Financial Officer at JT, said “We are committed to playing our part in creating a more sustainable future. By strengthening our circular economy initiatives, we’re making it easier for our customers to recycle their old devices and make more environmentally conscious choices when upgrading. Refurbished technology is a key part of that journey, offering both environmental and financial benefits.”

Stuart Moseley, Director at ITHSCI, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with JT on this important initiative. By introducing secure and accessible recycling points in-store, we’re helping ensure more devices are processed responsibly and kept within the circular economy for as long as possible.”

Together, these initiatives form part of JT’s wider sustainability strategy, focused on reducing waste, extending the lifecycle of devices, and supporting customers and communities to make more sustainable choices.
