JT nominated for telecoms ‘Oscar’

JT has been nominated for telecoms, World Communications Award. The ‘Oscars’ of the telecommunications industry.

Global giants such as BT, AT&T, Vodafone and Telstra have also been nominated for various awards. ‘Best Connectivity Solution’ is the category JT has been shortlisted in.

The World Communication Awards is the largest awards ceremony in global telecoms. During a ceremony in London in November, the winners will be announced.

Its ground-breaking Open Roaming M2M solution means JT has been shortlisted for the award. This is a managed IoT* network service which enables machines to communicate with each other via a mobile SIM card. The JT service is currently powering over a million devices worldwide. This includes payment systems in Africa to taxi and private hire firms in the UK.

JT is also in the process of integrating alternative connectivity services into its platform including the Channel Island’s first LoRa** network. This is due to launch by the end of this year.

Open Roaming

‘Open Roaming’ means that data can travel via any mobile network. Information, therefore, can travel down a multitude of routes and bypass any points of failure should they occur. Data isn’t ‘steered’ down a particular operator’s network. As, this can lead to device and connectivity problems.

In some cases, JT’s Open Roaming M2M solution is literally having a life-changing impact. Last year, JT won a contract to supply SIM cards connecting heart rate monitors in patients to special monitoring equipment for a company in Canada. This provides a real-time information feed which has the potential to save lives. Over 34,000 patients have already been connected.

Therefore, this one example shows how JT’s M2M Open Roaming solution enables a business to connect with its customers. So, even customers who are spread across an entire country, and deliver reassurance to patients that their health is monitored 24 hours a day.

Tom Noel, Managing Director of JT’s Wholesale Division, said: “It is a great honour just to be shortlisted in the industry’s most prestigious awards. It’s another example of JT being a market-leading partner of choice for global telecoms innovation. The Machine to Machine space is moving very quickly and JT is at the forefront of delivering these services to a worldwide customer base.”

The Tech for Jersey Live, a weekend of unforgettable live music

As the Island reflects on another successful Jersey Live weekend, including unforgettable performances from Richard Ashcroft, Madness and Disclosure; headline sponsor JT reveals the technology statistics behind the CI’s biggest music event.

  On JT’s mobile network:

  • 45,418 voice calls made from the venue
  • 169 GB of 4G data used over the weekend. Equivalent to uploading 114,937 photos to Facebook, 68,962 minutes of browsing the internet or 86,203 minutes of streaming music.

On JT’s FREE Wi-Fi provided across the site:

  • 27 Wi-Fi spots & over 700M of fibre installed
  • 3,087 unique devices connected, with 867 GB of data transferred. Equivalent for example to downloading 1156 CD’s

Social media: Snapchat was the No.1 social media platform used by 917 different people.

Tamara O’Brien, Head of Marketing for JT, said: “These stats tell the real story behind Jersey Live. Thousands of people gathered in one place, for the CI’s biggest music event and turned to social media to share their experiences in real-time. Getting the most from the technology we provided. There are big numbers here. We’re proud to have supported the demand for so much data over the weekend.

“The mobile data used on Saturday alone was the equivalent of 53,000 MP3 files. Thus, showing just how much festival-goers enjoyed sharing their photos and videos. Especially on their social channels, by using our fastest 4G network.  Many of them also took advantage of our recent network upgrade providing up to 30% faster 4G speeds on the latest handsets.  Interestingly, Snapchat has now overtaken other platforms allowing people to share videos and images instantly. This will continue to drive demand for seamless data services like those we provided this weekend.  Once again Jersey Live attracted record numbers and it was great to ensure everyone could stay connected throughout. As well as our role in supporting the local music talent, which got a chance to play through the Battle of the Bands competition we supported.”

About JT

The CI’s fastest network just got 30% quicker

Customers accessing JT’s 4G mobile network in the Channel Islands using the latest mobile handsets are now experiencing the fastest network. Thanks to a software upgrade JT has recently undertaken.

JT’s 4G network was recently independently proven by almost 600 Islanders to be the fastest. Even better, with the scheduled upgrade it further improves the customer experience.

In technical terms, the upgrade means that users of the most popular and high-spec handsets, like the iPhone 6S and the Samsung Galaxy S7, are now able to enjoy an even quicker mobile experience. Typically up to 30% faster than before. For example, on the Samsung Galaxy S7 speeds of up to 300Mb/s are now achievable. Meaning this is a new maximum speed that is better than double that of the other providers in the Channel Islands.

When it Comes to Connectivity, Speed is Vital

Thierry Berthouloux, JT’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, said: “When it comes to mobile connectivity, speed is vital. We’re delighted to bring more good news to our mobile customers. Thus, enabling them to experience even faster download speeds using their mobile devices. The Channel Islands have one of the highest penetrations of smartphones in the developed world, and so providing customers with improvements to our network wherever we see an opportunity is something we will continue to do through investment and staying ahead of the latest technology.

“This latest upgrade will be especially useful for anyone who relies on their mobile to do business on the go. Keeping them connected at the best possible speeds wherever they are. It will also be great news for festival-goers at JT sponsored Jersey Live in September, allowing music lovers to download/stream and do more than ever on their mobiles. We were the first network to complete this in the Channel Islands. It is still part of our on-going work and investment in our network alongside our partner, ZTE. Therefore, ensuring our customers have access to the very best network we can provide.”

Notes to Editor

  • The 30% faster speeds are achievable when using JT’s 4G network and a category 6 (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S6 or the iPhone 6S) or category 9 (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S7) handset.
  • The previous maximum speed achieved on the JT 4G network was 225Mb/s. Since the upgrade customers could potentially get up to 300Mb/s.
  • The upgrade has made improvement to the speeds for the Carrier Aggregation feature which allows handsets to use more than one frequency band at a time (JT has three bands: 800, 1800 & 2600). Category 6 phones can join two bands together and category 9 phones can join three bands.

Autism Jersey receives boost from Golf Day

The annual Autism Jersey golf day, sponsored by JT, took place on Friday 12th August at La Moye Golf Club. In total, it raised £15,000 for the charity.

Good weather and yet another excellent turn-out ensured the success of the day. A day which involved 22 teams enjoying a round of 18 holes followed by lunch in the Clubhouse. A raffle and auction, including a golf flag signed by 2016 Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke, boosted the funds raised. These funds will go directly towards the development of a purpose-built Autism Centre in Jersey.

The winning team was Elian with an outstanding score of 104. Followed by Quilter Cheviot with 92 and Ashburton with 89. Meanwhile, individual prizes went to Derren Glover of JT for the men’s longest drive. Also to Alexa Saunders of Carey Olsen for the women’s longest drive. And finally to Martin Smith of Dandara for the nearest the pin.

A Mission

During the lunch the chairman of Autism Jersey, Nick Winsor, told guests that Autism Jersey is on a mission. A mission to provide the support that is needed on the Island. He spoke more about plans for a purpose-built centre for autism in Jersey. A site in Trinity has been identified, and plans drawn up, he said.
Thanking JT for their support of the annual Golf Day, he said: ‘Money raised today will go directly to that centre.’ He also expressed his thanks to Autism Jersey’s Patron, Lieutenant-Governor General Sir John McColl who, he said, had been ‘incredibly supportive’ of the charity.

Sir John who had taken part in the golf day added: ‘The Charity’s progress has been absolutely remarkable. It has made such a difference to families that need support.’

JT’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Daragh McDermott, said: “Autism Jersey is a charity which offers invaluable support to islanders affected by autism and their families. We are, as ever, very pleased to support them in their fundraising efforts by sponsoring and taking part in this phenomenally popular annual golf day at La Moye Golf Club. Not only was the weather on our side but there was some great golf demonstrated by the participants. Thanks must go to each team for their support once again and congratulations to all the winners.”

Autism Jersey aims to raise at least £1.5 million for the centre in a joint effort with the States of Jersey.

Because of this success more mini-gigs planned for the pavements of St Helier and St Aubin throughout August.

Three of the recent JT Music Moments performers said:

Kacey Hacquoil (Kacey’s Music Moment)
“I think it’s great that JT are getting out and about and giving the youngsters a chance to play in public. It really helps our confidence as performers and it is good fun.”

So far, of the 15 pop-up gigs, we’ve seen a staggering 676 likes from the videos and 15,882 views. Therefore, this shows just how popular these young artists are. We’re running the free gigs right up until Jersey Live. Also, we’re pleased to offer opportunities for more younger people to attend Jersey Live with our new ‘kids-go-free’ customer promotions launched today.

“Music Moments is a way to celebrate the high standard and wide variety of music talent that exists in our Island. Our JT Summer of Music programme offers young people the chance to get up on stage in front of audiences to gain exposure and experience. About JT

JT’s Data Centres and Cloud Service reach Information Security Management Standard

JT has announced that its Data Centre facilities and Cloud Service have achieved the internationally recognised Information Security Management certification, ISO/IEC 27001.

To attain this important certification JT was required to demonstrate that its Data Centres and Cloud Service align with best practice. Especially, around an effective Information Security Management System (ISMS). Adhering to the set of controls outlined by ISO/IEC 27001, means JT has examined the risks around information security. And thus, has put in place policies and procedures to manage those risks. This will help protect its information assets and those of its customers.

As the Channel Islands’ leading provider of Data Centre facilities, JT already meets the highest level of recognised industry standards. This includes the certification from Service Organisation Controls (SOC 2 and 3) and achieving the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). In addition, in 2015 JT’s award-winning Cloud Platform became the first of its kind to gain regulatory approval from the Alderney Gambling Control Commission. And it was allowed to host global eGaming customers. Even recently it received the Best Go-to-Market Cloud Strategy Awards in the inaugural Telco Cloud Forum Awards.

A Testament to the Hard Work of our Team

Managing Director of JT’s Global Enterprise Division, Paul D Taylor, said: “Achieving another major level of accreditation is a further demonstration of the level of quality of our market-leading Channel Island’s hosting facilities.  ISO/IEC 27001 is a highly regarded and much sought after certification. Adding this to our portfolio of quality endorsements is testament to the hard work of our teams that have played part in ensuring that we adhere to the most stringent controls. I’m very proud of the joint commitment shown by our teams to delivering the very best service levels across the JT Group.

“Achieving ISO/IEC 27001 further underpins our commitment to ensuring our hosting and Cloud service is as broadly accredited and secure as any in the Channel Islands. Hosting is a fiercely competitive sector. Our global customers expect the highest level of commitment to compliance and governance. So, it’s important to differentiate the service we offer by continuing to secure industry standards like this.  Importantly, achieving this certification on top of our existing accreditations bolsters our profile. Especially, amongst a wider global audience and differentiates JT as a secure, trusted partner.”

David Cartwright, JT’s Group Security Officer, said: “The award shows our customers that security is absolutely fundamental. Especially, to the day-to-day operation of the services we offer. We already had huge confidence in the quality of our operations. However,  this certification provides further authoritative independent confirmation and surety to our customers”.

Annual charity day boosts fundraising

At the halfway point of its annual staff charity day, JT has already raised over £10,000 towards their goal of £20,000.  This will then be shared among its chosen charities for 2016.

JT’s annual charity day took place on Friday 17 June with Channel Island staff taking part in a raft of fundraising activities. This included cake sales, quizzes, raffles, a staff BBQ and retail store collections. To date, £5,000 has been raised across the Channel Island offices which has then been matched by JT to boost the annual fundraising target at the mid-point to £10,000.

JT’s Head of Marketing, Tamara O’Brien said: “Our staff always get behind our annual charity day. This year was no exception, it was a fun-filled day reinforcing our charity commitments with some fantastic team-focussed activities across all our offices. It was great to see our staff wholeheartedly get behind this with all sorts of fun and different events. They pitted their wits against each other in a staff quiz and danced in Salsa sessions. The result of their combined efforts is really encouraging and means we are already halfway towards our fundraising target. Even more events and fundraising opportunities are planned between now and the end of the year.”

JT’s chosen charities for 2016 are Friends of SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit) in Jersey . And in Guernsey, The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation.
